Your Career and Your Health
The successful career is more important for health and longevity than diet and absence of bad habits.
Along with proper diet, high quality medical services, and absence of bad habits, it appears that success in life is playing the major role too.
In the sixties, professor sir Michael Marmot analyzed the information about health conditions of the government workers that are living in London. He discovered an interesting fact: the higher position the person has been promoted in his career, the healthier he is.
The professor has become interested in his own discovery and during the last 30 years he did similar researches in many other groups of people living in the different countries and related to different social groups. The result everywhere has appeared the same.
For example, he has discovered that people that have PHD on the average live longer than ordinary graduates and those have longer life than those who don’t graduate from high school.
He also found out that among Hollywood actors the greatest longevity are those that have Oscars.
The same picture goes among successful politicians too. Sir Winston Churchill, Konrad Adenauer, Dèng Xiǎopíng and the majority of USA presidents lived long life, although we can’t say that their life was easy and quiet.
Sir Michael has defined this phenomenon as “Syndrome of the status “. This is the name of his book recently published by him.
“People at the top of a social pyramid certainly live longer. The high status is more important for health than diet, medicine, and no smoking ” – said Sir Michael.
The professor Marmot’s idea is simple: negative emotions reduce life. For the human to have a spiritual balance and a good mood, there are two things of utter importance: associate recognition and the feeling that you control your destiny.
Also, he discovered that a surprisingly asset value and income size don’t affect on length of life.
Marmot said: “You can’t buy health for money. They matter only as an attribute of the high status. It is important, whether the person considers himself rich or poor”
It explains why in some countries with competently low level of life, for example, in Greece and on Malta, the average life length is above places like Britain and USA.
One more factor, according to the research result, is to respect the elderly.
As a matter of fact, professor Marmot has creatively developed Dale Carnegie’s well-known postulate: “The person’s behavior moves by the aspiration to be important”. Those who can do that have a chance to live longer.
