Why You Should Not Buy a Laptop
A laptop computer can be a tremendous convenience. They can allow you to stay connected or work from outside your home or office. They can save you some space or function as a desktop replacement and act as your main computer. Laptops, however, are not for everyone. In this article, we will touch on some of the reasons buying a laptop may not be the best choice for you.
For many of the products we buy, convenience goes hand in hand with higher cost. This certainly applies to laptops. Laptop computers are expensive. The same money you spend on a laptop will almost certainly buy a more powerful desktop. If you value being on the cutting edge, use resource intense programs a lot or want to get the most computing power for the money you spend you might be better off purchasing a desktop.
Adding to the higher cost of owning a laptop, is the higher cost of repairs. Parts and service for laptops cost more compared to similar repairs for a desktop computer. If anything should break or if a part needs replacing, you may be in for a scare when you get your estimate or bill.
While theft is generally not an issue for desktop owners, for laptop owners it is a major concern. Laptops are attractive targets for thieves. Any time you leave the house with your laptop, you will need to be certain of its whereabouts at all times. If you travel a lot or routinely take your laptop with you, you may want to invest in a lock or tracking software that can pinpoint the location of your laptop in the event it gets stolen.
Battery life is another point of frustration for laptop owners. Computers are power hungry appliances. Software programs can be resource intensive. Computers can perform adequately but not optimally when powered by a battery. While laptop batteries have come a long way in recent years, at some point you will most likely find yourself unsatisfied with the life of yours. Hopefully, when that time comes, you will be near an electrical outlet.
While laptops can be convenient, awe inspiring or even a necessity, they have their negative points as well. Before purchasing a laptop, ask yourself if you really need one. Determine if your money is better spent on a desktop based on your needs. If you do purchase a laptop, be prepared for the cost of ownership and protect it from theft.
