What to Watch For When Replacing Your Laptop Power Supply
One thing we like to look at often is the availability of refurbished laptop power supplies. Think about this for a moment, many large corporations and company’s go through laptops like crazy. Every couple of years they are depreciating their inventory and getting new equipment. I have seen this first hand in many companies I have worked for, where old laptops and parts are sold at very low costs to computer shops and online retailers. The point here is, don’t rule out refurbished parts for your laptops, especially laptop power supplies.
When shopping for replacement parts, especially laptop power supplies, be sure to check with the retailer as to the compatibility with your laptop or notebook. Also be sure and review the retailers return policy, especially if online. There are many bait and switch operations going on out there, so if the price seems “too good to be true,” it probably is. Often times these cheap prices advertised online are simply to get you to place an order. Once the order is placed, you’ll receive an email message saying they are back-ordered or out of stock and to call to make sure your order is confirmed. When calling, they try and get you to purchase something else or additional products. Many times, the original product they advertised, the one you tried to purchase online, is not even in stock and they never intended on selling it for that price anyway. Usually a quick internet search of the retailer can bring to light any shady dealings, so do your research.
Another good idea is to call around to local computer shops and ask if they have any refurbished or replacement power supplies. As I mentioned previously, many of these local computer stores receive parts and laptops from local businesses who are depreciating their inventory.
Several years ago I owned an HP laptop and about a year into it’s life the power supply shot craps. I contacted HP and a replacement power supply was going to be a couple hundred dollars, I can’t remember the exact cost, but it was more than I was really prepared or expected to spend. I found a refurbished HP laptop power supply online for half the price and it still works! So don’t be afraid to purchased refurbished products, but make sure you read the retailers return policy.
