What Makes a Gaming Notebook?
A gaming notebook is very much like a normal notebook as long as general parts and build principles go, but as soon as purpose and the whole interpretation of the word “laptop” comes into play we are about to discover some fundamental differences.
A normal notebook is heavily biased towards general usefulness and portability. These notebooks are composed of cheap components, most mainstream processor, memory and the graphics chip is also almost always integrated into the chipset giving a disappointing gaming performance.
Gaming notebooks on the other hand are geared towards top notch performance and uncompromising picture quality. These notebooks are heavy and hard to carry around, but that’s okay because they’re not designed for that. These notebooks are there for hardcore gamers to be able to switch their desktop computers for a laptop.
These laptops hardly ever surpass two hours of battery time and with the weight over 8-9 pounds they’re hardly considered a notebook anymore. They’re more like portable desktop computers for those who attend to lab parties rather often.
A gaming notebook costs a lot. For people who don’t care about the price these are real computing powerhouses. The graphics card or graphics cards are usually high end chips with thinly veiled as “mobile” chips. The most powerful notebooks use dual video cards for the user to be able to play in true high definition while using massive anti-aliasing or anisotropic filtering settings.
Laptop screens are more often full HD, than not. 1900×1080 resolution would give a desktop computer a run for its money, but a laptop is really having a hard time keeping up with the performance. Most recent games on this resolution yield just acceptable frame rates but older games like World of Warcraft run perfectly.
Gamers who have deep enough pockets and are willing to reach into it will most probably realize how deep it goes. A proper 17″ gaming laptop can cost anything from $1500 to $3500, the limit though is the sky. With a raid of SSDs and SLI video cards the price quickly goes above $4000.
More sophisticated gaming notebooks, mostly 15″ ones, can be had for as low as $1000 but then you’re missing out on the point of a really powerful configuration. A gamer laptop is all about power and performance and everyone who want to get it cheap will find out that a cheap unit with this title is usually the same as a normal laptop with a fat price tag.
