Tips For a Successful Job Sharing Arrangement

It may be very important to a professional to be able to reduce their work hours but not step out of their career completely.

Many companies are offering employees the opportunity to job share, which is when two employees share one full-time position. In this arrangement, the employees typically share the salary and benefits on a pro-rata basis.

Here are some tips for a successful job sharing arrangement.

Communication Skills

When considering this arrangement, you must evaluate the communicate skills of the people that desire to share a job.

Both individuals must have very effective communication skills. Each individual must be able to write and speak effectively to be able to update the other as to what happened when they were out of the office.

The pair must be able to work as if one person were completing the job.

Work Ethic

In a job sharing relationship both individuals must have a similar work ethic and commitment to the job.

This arrangement is most successful when the individuals are equally devoted. Are they both willing to put in extra time or receive calls to field questions during their off time?

If one individual is willing and the other is not the job sharing arrangement will most likely not last very long.

Each individual must be able to trust that the other will hold up to their end of the position.

Compatibility

In the best job sharing arrangements the individuals that are sharing have the same career goals.

It is important to have this compatibility if you are looking to continue to advance your career.

Oftentimes, the individuals in these arrangements become a team advancing into other positions as long as they are both willing to put the effort into their careers.

Organization

It is very important to a job sharing team to develop an organization system that works for both of them.

Each should remember that they may do things slightly different, but they need to keep a unified front so that the position runs smoothly.

If one of the individuals does the job drastically different from the other the company may not feel the job sharing arrangement is successful enough to continue.
