Small Laptops – What Can You Expect?
Small laptops are made popular by the recession and have been on top of every geeks wish list for three years. The first ones were clumsy and too little to use but nowadays you can turn up in a computer shop with $350 in your pocket and make a great deal. What are they good for? Is there anything you can’t do with them, as the low price may suggest?
Netbooks are not made for exceptional computing power, if you thought they are cheap because of the small screen you may need to see a few processor benchmarks to readjust this idea. They are fitted with every port and connectivity a notebook usually comes with, but their processor is not to be mentioned as a benefit. Well, they can be a benefit if you don’t run resource hugging applications and the low power consumption is higher on your priority list.
Whenever you switch a netbook on you will notice that the screen is small. It is indeed so small that some applications may suffer from it, net browsers are not one of those. Graphic and web designers who need to get some creative work done may find the resolution low for their liking, but for once in a while you can get away with doing more than just typing e-mails or chatting.
The processor is slow, not as slow as some people make it out to be, but not strong either. In everyday 2D applications you won’t see tearing and won’t have to wait for seconds before you switch from one window to another, but in programs that would make good use of a good floating-point speed it’s a huge drawback. Don’t run scientific applications or video encoding and you’ll most probably be fine.
Their battery lives up to all expectations. Some cheaper models run out of juice in less than 4 hours, but if you look around with both eyes open, you’ll be able to spot models that actually work for more than 10 hours on a single charge. Asus even claims that their 1005PE-P works for 14 hours, but that’s to be taken with a grain of salt. Not that they’re bending facts, but that kind of wireless productivity is usually meant with Wi-Fi turned off and screen set to second lowest brightness.
If you need a computer that is as light-weight as it gets, have an exceptional battery, doesn’t break the budget and still gets most online tasks done as good as other units then you will make a good use of a netbook. Keep your eyes open and make sure to read forum posts, articles and reviews about a model you plan on buying and you’ll have a unit that will serve you for a long time.
