Reservations About Reservation Quota on Careers
In this article I intend to discuss the effect of reservation quota on careers. Detaching the career aspect of it, we find that reservation quotas as such constitute a gray area to our correctness compass. From one perspective its a direct contradiction to the principle of equality but from another equally valid perspective it is something we are obligated to do. These quotas are given to people who have been trampled beneath the shoes of the human race in ages past. So, when one looks at it in that way, it seems obvious that the human thing to do would be to continue on with these reservation quotas. Taking a closer look, one realizes that the situation is not as neatly resolved as that.
The decisions to set these quotas were made in a time when the wounds were still fresh upon the back of these oppressed and underprivileged sections. The “How many” and “To whom” numbers were calculated relying upon data that is now completely obsolete. Many of these people have shaken off the shadow of their past and have made huge strides as successful businessmen and career persons. In the light of the above it would be a gross embarrassment to them to still be considered underprivileged.
The problem has another side which is the most threatening. These quotas secure jobs for the sections to which they are granted, what about the sections who do not have such guarantees. I speak here about the rest of society, the people who are not given any special treatment, the ones for whom no special reservations have been made. Unemployment rears its ugly head once again and many people are barely making it through the day. This problem is compounded by the perpetually increasing cost of living.
There are also certain sections of the underprivileged who do not need to use these quotas, however they use these as an excuse to slack off in their formative years secure in the knowledge that they have something that has been set apart for them. This is blatant abuse of a provision which was brought in to equalize all the elements of society.
What I am trying to say here is not that all of the underprivileged sections have risen up, I am not suggesting scrapping the entire quota system. There are still sections of people who were and still are suffering from persecution and other related problems. What I am suggesting is a revaluation of the quota system. Analyze the problem again and allocate the reservation quotas accordingly.
More than being just a special consideration, the reservation quota system should become a basic consideration, a boost we give to anyone and everyone requiring assistance. Sticking on to the current system is only going to cause an outrage sooner or later, and that is going to lead to a horrifying conclusion which we have seen time and time again in the past. Let us give help where help is due and be human while doing this, not be dictated by an archaic set of rules made in a different time when the sun shone harsher than it does now.
