Laptop Buying Guide
The number of laptops available in the market today is quite large and you need to give it some thought in order to get a laptop that is just right for your needs. In choosing the right laptop for you, you must first identify your needs.
The first and most popular criterion is processing power. Even laptops can now have dual core processors and huge amounts of memory in them that can pack as much power as a desktop. You must choose a laptop that has sufficient processing power for the task that you commonly perform on it. Obviously, word processing does not take as much power as rendering or photo editing.
The size of the display should also be a concern since that would be the main interface that you would use. Although big screens can be better, it also consumes more energy compared to smaller ones and could affect the battery life of your laptop. The size of the screen often dictated the size of the laptop itself. This is a concern if you move around a lot and you want a laptop that is not too big to lug around. Pick a laptop that has the right screen size so that you can read the text on screen clearly.
Connectivity features and ports are also very important. Most laptops now have on-board Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and webcam. But be sure to check just in case the model you like doesn’t have these features. Make sure that the number of USB ports on the laptop is right for you as a USB hub would just be another unnecessary gadget that you would need to carry around. An on-board card reader is also a big plus, especially for those who have digital cameras; since it lets you use your memory cards just like a diskette.
Lastly, you should also consider the small things like the keyboard of the laptop. Netbooks are very popular nowadays due to its very small size and portability. Some people who but netbooks might regret it later as the small keys are quite hard to use, especially for people with stubby fingers. Even for full sized keyboards on laptops, you should also examine the layout of the keys so that you are fully comfortable with it. Build quality is also very important especially the hinges on the screen. Make sure that the laptop is solid and sturdy and not flimsy as it could only get worse with extended use.
