Core Affiliate Management Strategies Revealed

One question that I keep seeing repeated across affiliate related web sites is “has affiliate marketing had its day?” or “is affiliate marketing still an effective way of promoting?” It bemuses me that the effectiveness of this marketing method is even being questioned. Affiliate marketing is still the most effective tool out there for product promotion. Of course there are many other tools that will work in tandem with and will help to enhance affiliate marketing strategies. If you look at it logically it’s a bit of a no brainer really. How else could you get such market coverage. Having hordes of hungry people promoting your product across the web 24/7 and 365 days a year should make an affiliate program very attractive to any merchant. It seems likely that affiliate marketing has been brought in to question by those that have had limited success with their campaign. But maybe they should look a little closer at how well it was planned and put into action in the first instance. The key to becoming successful in any venture is preparation and planning. Many would be online marketers tend to be complacent and careless about their campaign.

Running a successful affiliate campaign can be quite daunting and, I would venture to say, impossible if you are unprepared . Understanding the importance of attracting, managing and holding on to affiliates and the methods to achieve this is not optional, it is a must and will greatly increase your chances of running a profitable program. The following core strategies should be the basis upon which you build a successful affiliate marketing campaign. As you become more proficient these strategies can be adapted to suit your particular business needs. But remember that these methods are tried and tested, therefore variations should not be too extreme.

Commissions

The single biggest reason for anyone becoming an affiliate is to earn money. An obvious fact that many appear to overlook. All of the remaining strategies are worked around this very simple and obvious fact and are dedicated to achieving this basic aim. To attract the right type of affiliate and retain their loyalty you must first and foremost appeal to their pocket. Therefore, look at the commission your competitors offer and better it. Process all payments to affiliates quickly and efficiently. Never keep affiliates waiting for payment and allow instant access to their commissions. Try to offer a variety of payment options to attract a worldwide ‘family’ of affiliates. That said, there are now a core group of payment methods recognised globally so it should present no problem to offer these.

Training

This is an absolute must. Although tried and tested affiliate marketing tactics will remain, by and large, virtually unchanged the methods of promotion are always evolving. Ongoing training for both the novice and experienced affiliate should remain a priority. The confidence that your affiliate has in their abilities to market your product should not be underestimated. This should also be extended beyond general marketing to include knowledge of your product. Give good quality information, testimonials and, where possible, samples to increase your affiliates knowledge base.

Support

Allied to training, good support helps to enhance your affiliates ability to promote successfully. Offering promotional tools, tips, great back-up or anything that can make your affiliates life easier is essential. Support can be provided through blogs or member only web sites. Provide pre-written e-mail letters, articles, sales letters, testimonials, banners of various sizes, logos and keyword lists. In fact anything that will allow affiliates to earn their commissions.

Build relationships

Correctly executed, this tactic could make your affiliate program stand out against your competitors. You should always encourage your affiliates by personally contacting the best performers to thank them for their efforts. Offer incentives and rewards. Make them feel that they are an important part of your continued success, which of course they are. Encourage them to provide input. Ask for suggestions and feedback, both good and bad, on how they feel you can improve your market share. In short, respect your affiliates. They are the life blood of your business. Always deal with them with a friendly, open and positive attitude.

Traffic

Unfortunately the negative side of affiliate marketing must also be considered when planning a campaign. Unethical methods of driving traffic to your site will not only damage your profitability but more importantly it will damage your reputation. A good affiliate banning and approval scheme should counter this. Finding out where your traffic is coming from reduces the chances of unscrupulous affiliates infiltrating your campaign. On a more positive note, it can also help you to target your campaign more effectively.

These are the core strategies to be considered when building your marketing campaign. Affiliate marketing is still very much alive and kicking and will continue to be the key to successful product promotion for the foreseeable future.
