Confused As To What Job Or Career You Want?
Are you feeling like you want to do something different as a new job or career, and want to know how to get started? Are you feeling drained from long hours at work? Do you get respect, acknowledgment from your boss for the work you do? Do you feel energized or satisfied at work? IF you answered “No” to any of these questions, maybe it is time you “honor” yourself and take time to listen to that inner voice that is saying: “It is time to live the life you’ve always wanted.” Stop waiting for something else to change or someone to offer you a new life.”
Are you seeking a position or life that acknowledges you and utilizes your gift, talents and education? Do you want autonomy to make your schedule? Do you want respect, satisfaction and a sense of self-worth? Is it time to explore other opportunities for employment, career or life changes, so you can choose what you want to do, versus accept what if being offered?
If you answered “YES” to any of those questions, it is time to move forward and take ACTION.
Many times we get discouraged about how our current position at a company is going – - no opportunity for upward mobility, more seasoned people in the same position as you, department management has changed, corporate has identified cutbacks, and your department is targeted as one department that will be impacted.
Instead of shifting industries and roles, just look at an opportunity to use your skills, experience, and expertise in another department within your company or explore other industries and stay in a similar role. This reduces a lot of the risk and investment for you and increased the likelihood of finding a solution to some of your career issues. It also presents answers that are more attainable or realistic.
Suggestions for Transitioning To Another Department
1. Identify appropriate goals. Review and identify your work skill set with measurable examples of how you saved time or money for the department or company. Highlight and market those skills and problem-solving tools you possess, to another department or industry. Research job descriptions on the Internet that are aligned with what your skills, talents, gifts, and interests are. Use key phrases listed in job descriptions that relate to the position you applying for when you update your resume. Create a cover letter that will highlight the requirements that employers are seeking. Use the exact words that are in the job posting to customize your resume to fit the company job posting.
2. Be different. Identify ways to market yourself and your skills that will attract employers, to distinguish you from other candidates. Check out books at the library on cover letters and resume writing. Visit college career centers and request assistance on locating resource materials that may be used or checked out.
3. Sell it. Identify a plan/ approach to present yourself to your market in a way that is appropriate for you. Ask a mentor or co-worker who is in a supervisory or management position to think about their “star performers in their department. Ask them: “What distinguishes your “star” employees in your department? Give me specific examples of what the employee does that makes you see them as a high-achiever?”
Write the words, phrases or examples the supervisor or manager gave when they described their best employee(s). Use those words and phrases to enhance the description of your assets utilizing the examples you learned from the discussion with the supervisor or manager.
Are You An “Empty Nester” or A Future Retiree who is searching for the “dream career” that you’ve been postponing, until the kids move out of the house?
If you are an “empty nester” whose children have gone off to college, moved out of the house, and or have gotten married, then now is the time to identify what you enjoy doing and determine the next steps to move forward to the career/job you’ve always wanted. Have you wanted to explore other careers that are a “better fit” for you? Maybe you are a couple years from retirement and just don’t know what you want to do. Does this describe you?
What’s the payoff of waiting and doing nothing? Zip! Zilch! Nada! You don’t have to wait until the moving truck leaves the driveway with your son or daughter’s last load of furniture. You don’t have to wait until the company gives you a retirement recognition event.
So what are you waiting for? Make time now and identify what energizes you, what you like to do, where there are opportunities for your skills, education and expertise. Set aside time each week – - at least one hour – - to start taking action to get you where you want to go. If you have been in a position for years feeling stuck in that position, allow time before you actually will leave your position to explore the things you enjoy doing. Allow at least 3- 6 months to explore what you really want to do. Give yourself the time to gradually select what you want to do. Waiting until the last moment and forcing yourself to choose something is stressful.
Yes, but – - those infamous words that we say when we don’t choose to move forward in our life, and choose to stay right where we are. Ah but, how do I start? Where do I start? Who can I talk with who will encourage me, mentor me, and keep me accountable for taking a couple steps each week to move forward and live the life I always wanted?
