Are You in Shape Financially? Now is the Best Time to Improve Your Personal Finances!
Many years ago I was living the life that most people could only dream of. I lived in one of the most beautiful places in Southern California, Marina Del Rey. I had the luxury of being able to workout at both Gold’s and World’s gym located in Venice. I saw every bodybuilding legend there was which was a thrill for me!
I was also in the best shape of my life, you see, I used to body build for fun (I don’t have the six pack anymore I think I replaced it with a kegger how is that for a visual J ). Not only did I look good (work with me, I am not really conceited) I never felt better. Confidence flowed from my body simply because I knew how good I looked and how amazing I felt. Even my friends told me so…OK…well maybe I told them so…it was a few years ago!
So what is the relationship between your personal finances and me being in great shape and loving life? EVERYTHING!!!
Being financially fit is about having the COMPLETE confidence that you are impervious to the financial ruin happening to so many people today. That great feeling of knowing you can handle a financial emergency without putting your life in peril. When you no longer carry the stress related to debt you become a free person with abundant confidence! You feel it and people around you know it!
So let’s discuss the similarities.
- KNOW WHERE YOU STAND – You are what you eat…ever hear that before. When I was body building I kept a journal of anything and everything I consumed good or bad! What you eat, drink, chew (yes I even had to log if I chewed a piece of gum based on calorie intake). This was a very revealing to me and quickly showed where I could improve my body by what I eliminated and or added to my diet. Your financial strength needs to start in the same fashion. In order to know where you stand financially you must keep a journal of EVERY penny you spend. This journal will be a real eye opener and be the start of your financial growth program.
- DON’T DO IT ALONE – I never would have been successful in my body building program if I tried to do it all alone. I had a workout partner, a nutritionalist and a trainer working with me all the time. I knew I had the mindset to become successful and reach my bodybuilding goals but I also knew that I did not have all of the knowledge necessary to get where I wanted to be in the time frame I wanted to accomplish. Your debt is no different. There is much information, tools, strategies, and people willing to help you achieve your financial goals but you need to seek their help. Yes, it is possible to do this on your own and you might become financially free eventually, the question is do you have the time and money to do this while you find your way! Look for help (a trainer if you will). Read anything and everything you can (this would be your nutritionalist), lastly find someone to partner with (someone to push you during those tough days with words of encouragement and motivation).
- KEEP TRACK OF YOUR PROGRESS - Remember in point #1 where I addressed writing down everything I ate? I kept a similar journal noting my body weight, the amount of sets / reps I did and weight used per exercise. I tracked this every month. At any given time I was able to see my progress and what areas I needed to improve. Keep a similar monthly journal to track your finances on a monthly basis. Just as my journal worked, your journal will track your progress, areas of improvement and most importantly your financial successes!
- DON’T BE TOO HARD ON YOURSELF- I remember many times when I would beat myself up when I felt that I was not progressing in my weight gains and muscle mass. And especially when I would have a week moment and cheat a little on one of my two-a-day workouts. You thought I was going to mention eating the wrong food didn’t you? J. Well I did that too but only on my official cheat day! The lesson is simple; don’t be too hard on yourself. Just keep moving in the right direction and the results will come. If you cheat a little it’s OK…just get back on the bike!
- REWARD YOURSELF - I mentioned before about cheating with my food consumption. I actually had a cheat day once a week where I was allowed to eat anything that I wanted. This special day a week was to reward myself for the previous week’s progress while also keeping my sanity! It is very important that you keep your own insanity. Many people fail when they are on a diet. The cause…eating the same thing day in and day out without any reward. Generally speaking the stricter a plan the more likely someone is likely to fail! Now this is not a free pass for you to go on a shopping binge! Provide yourself with a small reward on occasion and celebrate any milestones you achieve J
- TAKE TIME TO REFLECT AND ENJOY – I had just one regret in my bodybuilding days. I never really took the time to stop and relish my accomplishments. I had many victories, too many to mention. The sad thing is that I was too consumed with achieving the next goal to appreciate the previous successes. It is so important to savor each and every milestone you reach. The euphoria you will experience becomes the rocket fuel that catapults you to achieving bigger accomplishments, goals and successes.
