Let’s start with the part that is often closest to the affiliate’s heart. The compensation or sales commission. The simplest affiliate program will just pay a defined commission on sales, usually a percentage of the sales that the merchant actually makes, thanks to the affiliate. More complex arrangements may include a percentage that rises if sales go above a certain level or compensation (but not so much) for customer actions triggered by the affiliate, like signing up to the merchant’s newsletter or filling out all of a form online.

Smart affiliate programs will include readily accessible information for the affiliates that they can use to attract more customers and to convert more of them to sales at the merchant’s site. The merchant (who knows the market) can make this information available in the form of online training, an affiliate website with FAQ sections and tools for promotion and sales. Some merchants go so far as to make a complete website available to the affiliate (although affiliates may have to look after the hosting themselves).
This is not to say that the merchant has no further work to do. Merchants can always work on improving the conversion on their site where potential buyers come after following the affiliate link promoted by the affiliate. Your affiliates will be watching this too. As you can imagine, they would be peeved if they did an amazing job in sending qualifies leads to your merchant page only to discover that conversion is terrible.
Let’s check some of the important points for a merchant building an affiliate program.
1. Do a good sales job – on your affiliate program! Your affiliates are prospected by a number of different vendors, offering different affiliate programs. Make sure that your stands out positively and “sell” it to the affiliates. Their buy-in is critical. When they come onboard, you’re on the road to affiliate success.
2. Look for affiliates that are likely to be interested in your offering. This may be because they already have a site of their own with a compatible theme to what you’re doing. In that case they can benefit by making affiliate sales off of their site and you can build your affiliate network and revenues at the same time. However stay sufficiently focused. Trying to sell everything to everyone is often a recipe for disaster.
3. Back up your program with regular communications, tools and tips on how to increase affiliate sales. Affiliates need attention like any other human being and it’s easy to lose sight of that fact in the day to day sales activity. Plus the more you get a good communication going one way, the better things will be in the other direction as well.
This is important if you want to make sure that you get feedback from your affiliates on what they like, don’t like etc. When you know there’s a problem, you can fix it. When you don’t know, you can only wonder why your affiliates keep leaving.
4. Keep feeding your affiliates information and attention, even if they seem to be doing very well in any case. If you don’t make your positive presence felt, the most successful affiliates may be tempted by offers from other merchants and leave your product by the roadside.
